A different route through Kaş! We are proud to share a map of five characteristic trees in Kaş. Not all of them are native to the area, but all are species worth seeing and experiencing. As you walk around the centre of Kaş, just look down a back street or a side road!
Paulownia tomentosa / Empress tree
The fastest-growing tree in the world. In cleaning the air, one paulownia is worth fifteen pines. The paulownias in Emin Erdem Square stand out in spring with their purple flowers.
Ceiba pentandra / Kapok
Also called the giant of the forest. With its thorny trunk, magnificent flowers and huge fruit, the kapok — a tree of tropical climates — is one of the special species that has adapted to Kaş. There are kapok trees in Emin Erdem Square and near the coast guard station.
Callistemon citrinus / Bottlebrush
Pressing its leaves releases a pleasant lemon scent, which is why it is also called lemon bottlebrush. Callistemon adapts very well to where it grows; although it is a shrub, the one on İbrahim Serin Caddesi has reached about 3 metres.
Platanus orientalis / Oriental plane
Plane trees are famously long-lived. As they age their trunks may rot and hollow out, yet they live on. The finest example in Kaş stands in Cumhuriyet Square, and at a book festival held in Kaş this tree was declared a “monument”.
Cactus sp. / Cactus
The cactus needs very little water and, in exact contrast, a great deal of sun and heat. We are used to seeing cacti small, so the imposing one on Hükümet Caddesi is quite striking.
